The 2003-2009 production run of Toyota 4Runners will stay near and dear to the heart of many. Engineered as a semi-luxury mid-size SUV, the fourth gen 4Runner gained notoriety for its reliability and off-road prowess. This era 4Runner uses a body-on-frame design with a laddered chassis, independent front suspension and solid axle rear suspension and comes in three trim levels - SR5, Sport Edition and Limited. Two engine options are available for all trim levels. The first is an all-new 4.0L V6, producing 245 horsepower and 283 lb-ft of torque, marks the first time Toyota has equipped a truck with an all-aluminum engine. The second engine is a 4.7L V8 (2UZ, the same found in the Tundra, Sequoia, Land Cruiser and Lexus SUVSs). At the halfway point of 2003-2009 4Runner production, this highly reliable, smooth driving V8 was producing 270 horsepower and 330 lb-ft and is highly responsive to intake and exhaust improvements. All 4x4 4Runner models use a two-speed transfer case with a Torsen limited slip differential and are equipped with Hill Start Assist, Downhill Assist Control, Traction Control and Vehicle Stability Control. Auto leveling and height adjustable rear air suspension (only available from the factory on V8 Limited models) was another powerful OEM feature that made the 2003-2008 era of 4Runners such versatile machines. However, like the specialty X-REAS body control suspension system, the air lift components were prone to leaks and pre-mature wear. The preferred solution in this case is to go with an aftermarket replacement or a high-end conventional off-road shock and reservoir system.
