Even though they are rugged and reliable vehicles, standard Jeep Wranglers are not designed for overly aggressive off-road use. In order to safely take them off the pavement, owners must make a few modifications. First and most importantly, they must replace the stock wheels with bigger, tougher tires that improve traction and ground clearance. There is, however, a tradeoff. The factory-built JK ring and pinion gears were not designed to accommodate these larger wheels. As a result, performance will suffer greatly. To remedy this and restore much needed power, it may be necessary to replace them with larger, more durable ring and pinion gear sets that can handle higher torque loads and minimize premature wear. You also are going to want to grab a strong locker if you plan on tackling extreme trails and obstacles while off-roading.
