Hey guys, Adam here with extremeterrain.com. And today, we're taking a closer look at and installing the Rough Country cold-air intake for the 12 to 18 3.6-liter Wrangler JK. Now, you should be checking this out for your own 3.6 if you're looking to ditch the factory restrictive air box and filter and favor for an aftermarket one that doesn't require a tune, gives you a bump in throttle response and acceleration, and overall you get your engine breathing a lot better with a washable and reusable filter. Now, this one here has an open air box to expose its conical air filter in red. This is a washable and reusable oiled filter and it's great at catching those micro particles that you don't want making its way into your engine after so long. Now, that's of course gonna help prolong the lifetime of your engine by helping to filter all that crap out, and the oil is actually gonna help catch a lot of those particles. And the nice thing about this is the cotton-gauze element allows you to reuse it, so, you can wash it, re-oil it, and throw it right back in when it comes time for routine maintenance. Which, by the way, can last up to 100,000 miles, so, far superior than your factory paper element. We'll take a closer look at that comparing the two side by side later on.The rest of the intake here includes a build aluminum heat shield with a weather stripping on the top here to seal in underneath of the hood, which is gonna help block out engine bay heat and keep that cold air in. The actual intake tubing there is also a billet aluminum to help dissipate heat. It's a lot skinnier, it's a lot more free-flowing than your factory intake, which has a lot of kinks in it, a lot of airflow restrictors. This is gonna help that free flow a little bit better, so, it's gonna help it breathe a little bit more. Now, this one doesn't require a tune. So, easily, right out of the box, you can install it and get going. No need to pick up a custom tuner or anything like that. So, out of the box, you should be good to go. Now, the price tag for this comes in right around 200 bucks making it one of the more affordable options in the category. Air boxes can get a little bit more intricate. Some of the more premium ones have a completely closed air box with a see-through window. Some of them have a couple of more bells and whistles than this one, but this is really affordable, gets the job done, and is super effective. Install-wise gets one out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter. Cold-air intakes are arguably one of the easiest things you can do under the hood of a vehicle. And that's no different here, this is gonna take about an hour from start to finish, and I'll walk you through it. So, let's get started.Tools used for this install are impact gun, or you can use a ratchet if you don't have one, and 6, 8, and 10-millimeter sockets along with an extension. There's a couple of 10-millimeters we have to get off. We'll start here on the side of that air duct, grab your 10 seconds and get this guy off. All right. Now there's two dead center. Same thing, get those off. Next up, let's switch over to an 8-millimeter and loosen up the clamp on our throttle body. If you don't have an 8-millimeter, you can also use a flat-head.Next up we're gonna pinch and disconnect that breather line right here. Pinch on that gray, pull that guy straight back, pinch and disconnect our sensor. And then lift up on the black tabs holding that wire on. Now it's loose.Next up we're gonna pull the entire intake off the vehicle, disconnect it from your throttle body just by pulling straight back, lift up on the air box, and set this aside. So, we've got our factory intake assembly off of our 36 behind me and it's on the table next to our Rough Country intake. I wanna take you through some similarities and differences. Now, inside, the factory unit is a flat paper element dry drop-in filter. Here, from Rough Country, is an oiled conical filter. Now, this is made from an open cotton gauze element, which is gonna help pull in a lot more volume of cold air, as opposed to the factory filter, which is good for filtration, not really optimized for pulling in the most cold air. So, this guy here is far superior when it comes to pulling in air more efficiently but it's also great at filtering things out. That oiled filter is gonna trap in those micro particles that you don't want making its way through, unlike the factory dry paper element filter which just isn't gonna have that oiled element. And the cotton gauze is far superior to that paper in the sense that it's reusable as well. So, this is washable and reusable. When it comes time for routine maintenance, pop it out, wash it, re-oil it, throw it right back in.Now, if you don't wanna do that much maintenance, you can pick up a dry aftermarket filter, it's usually the same kind of cotton-gauze material or something synthetic like that, or you can even pick up a dry filter instead if you're not looking to do all the maintenance when it comes time to re-oil it. You can pick up a dry filter that lasts just as long, has the same amount of filtration capability and airflow capability, but doesn't require as much maintenance. Dry filters are typically better for guys located in dry-climate areas seeing a lot of air pollution. Oiled filters are still effective in those areas, it's just they'll get gunked up a little bit more often than the dry filter because the oil kind of traps in those particles. Either way, they're both within 1% of each other. This one here is the oiled option in red. The rest of the assembly here uses an aluminum tubing great for heat dissipation, the black-powder coated finish on top. This is a lot of a more minimalist design compared to your factory assembly, which uses a flex tubing in the middle here, which is really airflow-restrictive. Same thing goes near the throttle body, it's got a sound tube there. So, this is gonna sound a little bit more aggressive since this doesn't have it. This is a billet aluminum heat shield, which is great for pulling in all that cold air, keeping that cold air trapped in and blocking out the excess engine-bay heat. Especially with the weather stripping included, which will seal in under the hood. With that said, we have a couple of assembly pieces to take care of. And then we'll set everything aside.Taking a look at the side of our factory intake assembly, let's pinch, turn, and disconnect our factory sensor. So, we're gonna turn it counterclockwise. It's a little bit tight in there. Then you can wiggle it, and pull it straight out, we can transfer it over. Let's set this guy aside. Next up you wanna take a look at the pre-drilled hole on the side of the new tubing. Grab the rubber grommet included in the kit, feed that guy around the hole. So, you want the grommet half on half off from the outside and inside. It fits on there like a glove, pretty snug there, just like that. All right. So, from there, you can take your factory sensor and pop this guy in here. Now, this can be pretty difficult because you don't want the grommet to pop on the inside. If it does, you have to pull it out, and then start over, kind of work your way around here so that it sits evenly inside that grommet. Perfect. All right, make sure it's oriented correctly and we can move on.Next up, let's assemble our heat shield. So, this guy here is gonna drop right onto that plate. These hex screws are gonna go through the outside in. Put a washer on the inside and follow that up with one of the nuts. And you're basically gonna repeat that for all six, there's three on each of those two sides. All right. Now you can grab your eight socket and your Allen key and tighten those down. Next up, let's put our weather stripping around the top here, that's gonna help seal in the heat under the hood. That guy just presses on around the edges. So, I'm gonna put pressure around it, wrap it all the way around. All right, running that corner can be a little bit difficult but, if you get it on the other side first, come back around to the corner, you should be able to just push it on a little bit there. Like that. Perfect. Now we can do around the circle here. All right, you're gonna take the thin weather stripping and wrap that guy around. All right, you might be able to compress it in enough to fit the whole thing around. If not, you can always trim it. Actually, we might be able to make it...Right below, where you feel your coolant, you have an 9-millimeter bolt that we have to remove. So, I can just get my gun in here and take that guy out. All right. So, next up we have two bolts put through the ends here. We're gonna drop on our air box, lining that up with the two grommets underneath. Then you wanna take the little spacer sleeves, slide those on the bolts underneath. This is a little bit tricky to do. You wanna make sure you're doing both of them. Now you can drop those bolts through the rubber grommets. Just like that. Now we can put our bolt back through the side where the radiator shroud is. All right, let's put that 8-millimeter back through. And this is a little bit more difficult to see now the heat shield is in place but it's just gone right back in the same spot it came out.All right. Next up we can take this bushing with the two studs coming off of it. We're gonna go from the outside in, put a washer and a nylon lock nut on the inside, grab your 10-socket and tighten that guy down.Next let's take our coupler and our tubing. We're gonna install this coupler with a clamp on the end of it, on the elbow side that connects to your throttle body. I'm gonna make sure that's mounted properly and make sure the clamp is evenly on as well. Just like this. You wanna grab an 8-millimeter socket and tighten down the clamp.Next, we're gonna take the other clamp and we're gonna put it on the other end, just like that. Actually, let's make sure they're facing the same direction. Now we can mount this through the throttle body and through the heat shield after we plug it in. All right, now let's mount it up.All right. So, I'll go through the air box, bring this down and connect it to the throttle body. All right. Now we can bring that clamp up and tighten that down. Let's put a hose clamp over our factory breather tube and connect that to the hose fitting welded onto the actual tubing here. Grab a 6-socket and tighten down the hose clamp. All right, last step here we're just gonna connect our filter making sure we have a clamp on the end of that, make sure that goes through. Grab a 7-ocket and tighten down the clamp. All right, from here, you're good to go.That's gonna wrap up my review and install for the Rough Country cold-air intake fitting all 12 to 18 3.6 liter JKs available right here, at extremeterrain.com.

Good Quality
Overall pretty easy to install. I tried cheating and followed along with the Exterme Terrain video but they left some key points out. So had to go back to the paper instructions. Overall satisfied with the product.

Rough Country Cold Air Intake
It was a very easy install. Two bolts underneath air cleaner somewhat difficult to get to, a second person made it pretty simple. It looks good and helped produce a nice tone on acceleration!

Easy install
Very easy install. After a week the only complaint is that I cut my thumb on one of the throttle body clamps, the the PCV clamp slipped. I replaced the PCV hose clamp with one I already had. I have not noticed any performance gains. With the R.C. throttle body spacer installed, I am getting the same mpg. A little louder though when accelerating.
