Hey guys. I'm Eric with ExtremeTerrain. Today we're gonna take a look at RedRock 4x4's Spare Tire Carrier and Tailgate Bracket for all 1997 to 2006 Jeep Wrangler TJs. You should really be checking this out if you're looking to accommodate a larger tire or if you're looking to replace a tired, old factory unit. Now, this unit from RedRock 4x4 can accommodate up to a 35-inch tire, and that's through its design of raising these lugs a little bit higher and pushing them a little bit further out. It can also accommodate the heavier weight that comes along with that tire through its thicker steel plate construction. And not only is this tire carrier more robust than your factory unit, but since we're talking about shopping for TJ Wranglers here, you're talking about looking for a product for a Jeep that's at least 15 years old, and chances are, by now, your factory tire carrier is already showing its age, corroding, and maybe even is damaged a little bit. So this tire carrier is really gonna upgrade the appearance of your Jeep.At about $100, it's a pretty reasonable price to upgrade the ability to carry a larger tire, and as far as the installation goes, it's a very easy one out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter, with some basic tools that I'll show you in just a second. You should have no problem getting this job done in less than an hour. So, let's go ahead, take a look at the tools you're gonna use, and show you how to do the installation. All right, guys. Tools we're gonna use for this installation include an electric impact wrench, a socket wrench, a 6-millimeter Allen socket, a 1/2-inch socket, and a 17-millimeter crescent wrench. All right, guys. Now we're gonna start our uninstall of our factory tire carrier. As you can see on ours here, it's an original. It's starting to look a little dated, and rusty, and corroded, and weathered, all those kinds of things that you're likely gonna see on a 20-plus-year-old Jeep. So, to get it uninstalled, we're just gonna undo these bolts up here. We also have a aftermarket spacer that kind of pushes the tire out and up a little bit, because we have an aftermarket oversized tire on our Jeep as well. So, let's go ahead and get started. All right, guys. Now, we're gonna take these out. I'm gonna grab a 1/2-inch socket. All right. Same size socket up top here. I'm gonna get these others started, because once we take these bolts out, there's nothing holding it up, so I'm gonna get them all started so we can remove them with fingers, and do everything kind of at once. Even though I'm doing this by hand, I put my socket back on there. Just a little bit larger gripping surface for my fingers, and I'm supporting the bracket with my left hand. All right, guys. Now that we have our factory tire carrier off the Jeep, I wanna throw it up here on the table and show you the differences between our new RedRock 4x4 unit and your tired, old factory tire carrier. Now, obviously, you're getting a fresh clean unit here, brand new black powder coat on there. It's really gonna dress up the appearance of your Jeep, but you're also getting an upgrade in ability here, thicker steel plate, and the design of it kind of pushes the tire up and out a little bit, to accommodate up to a 35-inch tire, so you're getting both a function and style upgrade with this new tire carrier. And one last thing I wanna point out, this is obviously a straight bolt-up application here. We are adding one additional bracket and three bolts that come in this kit. Other than that, it's pretty easy, as you're about to see.All right, guys. First, we're gonna mount this bracket on. We're gonna go ahead and reuse our factory hardware. And again, with a 1/2-inch socket, go ahead and tighten them down. Okay, I just rest it on up here. There are three button-head bolts that require a 6-millimeter Allen key or Allen socket to tighten down. Go ahead and grab those out of your kit, and just drop them in there, and make sure you have a washer in there as well. Now I'm gonna go ahead and grab the nylon lock nuts that come with this, and we'll tighten them up. I'm here at the bottom. Again, we're reusing our factory bolts. Gonna get those threaded in. All right. To tighten these down, go ahead and grab a 6-millimeter Allen socket or Allen key, and a 17-millimeter crescent for the nut. Okay. Now reload your 1/2-inch socket on here and we'll tighten these up on the bottom. All right, guys. That wraps up this review and install of this RedRock 4x4 Spare Tire Carrier Tailgate Bracket, for all 1997 to 2006 TJ Jeep Wranglers. And for all things Wrangler, keep it right here at extremeterrain.com.
