Jeep Grand Cherokee Gear Shift Recall

We talked about Jeep shifter issues just a few months ago. If you have a Grand Cherokee, you'd know how confusing the lack of tactical feedback can be. After the NHTSA investigated the matter further, we thought it was only a matter of time before the shift recall were to go into effect.

Jeep Grand Cherokees Recalled for Confusing Gear Shifters

Fiat Chrysler Automobile is recalling a whopping 811,000 Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep vehicles that have the shifter issue. The models being recalled are:
  • 2012-2014 Dodge Charger
  • 2012-2014 Chrysler 300
  • 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee
The issue is that more than 100 drivers of the above FCA vehicles have placed the car into what they thought was park, resulting in injuries and crashes. Drivers would exit the vehicle without actually putting into park, and the Jeep would roll away. Clearly the Jeep Gear Shift Recall is necessary measure to prevent further injury and damage. Of the injuries sustained from this issue, there have been reports of broken noses, facial lacerations, sprained knees, bruises, and trauma to legs. Other damaging highlights include parking lot and cemetery headstone accidents. FCA noted that the pending enhancements will incorporate warnings and a strategy to keep the car from moving under certain conditions, even if the car isn't in park. I'm no engineer, but it seems like the problem can be fixed by incorporating the traditional tactile response that people driving longer than 10 years (the vast majority of drivers) are used to.
