How to Install AFE Twisted Steel Shorty Headers (00-06 4.0L Wrangler TJ) on your Jeep Wrangler

CAUTION: Allow time for your vehicle to cool down prior to installation. When working on or under your vehicle proceed with caution. Exhaust systems reach high temperatures and may cause serious burns. Wear protective safety equipment; eye goggles and gloves to ensure a safe installation. aFe recommends professional installation on our products.

1. Support the vehicle on jack stands and disconnect the negative battery terminal from battery.

2. Loosen hose clamps securing breather hose and intake air tube. Remove breather hose and intake air tube.

3. Remove the serpentine belt by taking load off the belt tensioner pulley.

4. Remove the three bolts securing the power steering pump to the intake manifold and move the pump out of the way. DO NOT disconnect the lines.

5. From under the vehicle, disconnect the two after cat oxygen sensors from the wire harness and remove the catalytic converter down pipe by removing four bolts securing the catalytic converter down pipes to the exhaust manifold and three nuts at the outlet.

6. Using an engine hoist, suspend the engine from the engine bay to prevent from dropping down as the driver side motor mount will be removed.

7. Remove the three bolts securing the driver side motor mount bracket to the engine block.

8. Remove the nut and bolt securing the driver side motor mount bracket to the motor mount. Remove motor mount bracket.

9. Remove the two nuts and bolts securing the driver side motor mount to the chassis. Remove motor mount.

10. Disconnect the front and rear oxygen sensors at the wire harness.

11. Suspend the intake manifold to the engine hoist with tie straps. The intake manifold shares the same bolts and washers with the exhaust manifold.

12. Remove the nine bolts/washers and two nuts/washers securing the stock exhaust and intake manifold to the engine.

13. Remove the intake manifold off the pins by wiggling out and away from the engine. Suspend slightly up and then remove the stock exhaust manifold from under the vehicle.

14. Remove the intake/exhaust manifold gasket.

15. On a workbench, carefully remove the front oxygen sensor off the stock exhaust manifold using an O2 sensor wrench and install onto the front O2 bung on the aFe Twisted Steel header.

16. Now remove the rear oxygen sensor from the stock exhaust manifold using the same O2 sensor wrench and install onto the rear O2 bung on the aFe Twisted Steel header.

17. Remove the four clip-on nuts from the stock exhaust manifold and install onto the aFe Twisted Steel header collector flange.

18. Ensuring that the cylinder head is free from any dirt and/or debris, install the supplied gasket, aFe Twisted Steel header and intake manifold onto the cylinder head using the nine original bolts/washers and two nuts/washers but do not tighten.

19. Tighten the nine bolts/washers and two nuts/washers from step 18 starting with the middle and working your way out.

20. Plug the front and rear header oxygen sensor wire to the correct wire harness plugs and ensure the wires are away from the header.

21. Install the motor mount and motor mount bracket using the original hardware from steps 7-9.

22. Install the catalytic converter down pipe using the original hardware from step 5.

23. Plug the front and rear oxygen sensor wires back to the correct wire harness plugs.

24. Secure the power steering pump using the three original bolts from step 4.

25. Install the stock air intake tube and breather hose using the hose clamps from step 2.

26. Install the serpentine belt.

27. RE-CHECK ALL YOUR WORK.

28. Remove vehicle off the jack stands and re-connect negative battery terminal.
